For atrillery and mid range fighters( marksmen, archers, slingers), hitpoints are more important

could you explain a little more how that damage system works. I see all the stats for each unit, but now im not sure how to interpet them. or if you will point me to the correct source and ill read for myself.

It works how you would think it works. The damage a unit does is equal to their damage minus the defending units armor. Mortar ships have higher damage, so they are better. I have no idea where your logic in claiming that catapults are better is coming from. There is absolutely nothing there suggests that catapults are better, especially when you start thinking about it logically.

Timmy22t has no idea what he's talking about, so ignore him.

I said that wrong, I apologize. It was that moment when you think one thing but you say another thing (except I typed it out).

I meant attack is more important for artillery and mid range fighters.

Sorry for any confusion I caused.

But thinking about it further, for artillery only, it depends what type of purpose you are using it for, such as taking down a wall or troops. If you are trying to take out hoplites, rams are the best to use, as it hitpoints are high which is good when getting bombed upon, and its attack is high enough to kill an entire hoplite. Mortars are the best to take down walls and kill SGs, but they cause huge damage to your own side if you get bombed upon.

The attack is always most important for mid range fighters.

Once again, I'd like to apologize for my previous error.

We're talking about ships, not land units.

Hit points determine how many hits a unit can take. The damage done to a unit (as explained previously) is simply subtracted from the unit's hit points. Once that value reaches 0, the unit dies.

For front line ships, hitpoints matter, because they determine how many hits before the unit dies. However, mid ranged ships do not get hit by any attacks. So it doesn't matter if they have a million hit points. They shouldn't die either way, and if they do, you have bigger problems on your hands than worrying about optimal damage. Thus, the only thing that should matter is damage if you are trying to create an optimal navy.
